A Biographical Summary of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalised racism and fostering racial reconciliation.

Mandela was a key figure in the anti-apartheid movement, joining the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and co-founding its armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. He was arrested in 1962 and convicted of sabotage and other charges, spending 27 years in prison. During his incarceration, he became an international symbol of resistance against apartheid.

Upon his release in 1990, Mandela played a crucial role in negotiations that led to the end of apartheid and the establishment of a multiracial democracy in South Africa. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 alongside F.W. de Klerk for their work in ending apartheid. After leaving office, Mandela remained a global advocate for peace, social justice, and human rights. He established the Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue his work promoting equality and democracy.
