Kobe Bryant was an American professional basketball player. A shooting guard, he spent his 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Bryant won five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-Star, a 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, and a 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team. He was also named the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2008 and won two Olympic gold medals with the U.S. national team.

Bryant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Italy. He entered the NBA directly from high school in 1996 and quickly became one of the league's most popular and successful players. He retired in 2016 as the third-leading scorer in NBA history, behind only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.
