Joseph Smith Jr., born in Sharon, Vermont, in 1805, was the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. He claimed to have experienced a series of divine visions and revelations beginning in 1820, leading him to believe he was chosen as a prophet to restore the true Christian church.

Smith's experiences culminated in the publication of the Book of Mormon in 1830, a religious text he claimed to have translated from ancient golden plates. This text, alongside Smith's teachings and charismatic leadership, led to the formation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which rapidly gained followers in the northeastern United States.

Smith's life was marked by both religious fervor and controversy. He faced accusations of fraud and deception, and his teachings challenged established religious norms. Smith's quest for religious freedom led him and his followers westward, eventually establishing a settlement in Nauvoo, Illinois. However, tensions with neighboring communities escalated, and Smith was arrested and charged with treason. While awaiting trial in 1844, he was killed by a mob in Carthage, Illinois. Despite his untimely death, Smith's legacy continues to influence millions of Latter-day Saints worldwide.
