A Biographical Summary of Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer sometimes described as a polymath. Galileo has been called the father of observational astronomy, the father of modern physics, and the father of the scientific method.

Born in Pisa, Galileo began to teach at the University of Pisa and the University of Padua. He was the first to observe celestial bodies through a telescope, making groundbreaking discoveries about the nature of the universe. He observed that the moon was not a smooth, perfect sphere but had craters and mountains. He also observed that Jupiter had four moons orbiting it, challenging the long-held belief that Earth was the center of the universe.

Galileo's observations and theories often clashed with the teachings of the Catholic Church, which at the time held a geocentric view of the universe. This led to conflict and ultimately, Galileo was put on trial by the Inquisition. He was forced to recant his views and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. Despite this persecution, Galileo's work had a profound impact on the development of modern science. His emphasis on observation and experimentation helped to pave the way for the scientific revolution.
